THE
GLASS CASTLE REDESIGN
This very limited edition of The Glass Castle was designed and handmade with love by Ella Williamson at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in December 2024.
Printed on Neenah Classic Crest Eggshell 80 lb text, selected for its subtle texture, this edition was crafted using Adobe InDesign and incorporates illustrations made in Adobe Illustrator on a MacBook Air. The carefully selected typefaces chosen to bring Jeannette Walls’ words to life are Mrs. Eaves for the body text, Alta California for running headers and decorative elements, and Dreaming Out Loud Script for embellishments. Mrs. Eaves, designed by Zuzana Licko, is a refined serif typeface featuring unique ligatures, a low x-height, and broad proportions. The intentionally refined typeface emulates Jeannette’s complex, juxtaposed demeanor, shaped by her parents. Alta California, designed by Steve Mehallo, is a decorative typeface influenced by early Californian lettering styles, evoking history, heritage, and a handcrafted aesthetic that reflects the complexity of Walls’s upbringing. Dreaming Out Loud Script, designed by Elena Genova, adds a hand-lettered effect, offering a personal touch from the designer of this edition.
Here are the physical copies of both The Glass Castle (left) and Barbarian Days (right) in their visual display for the 2024 Book Design Show at Cal Poly. The Glass Castle is hand folded, bound, stitched, and glued. The display includes symbolic and representative elements from the two books to create a thought out merchandised table. The book show gave me an opportunity to showcase my hard work.
